Hello,
I will be traveling in Romania in late July for about ten days (two of us) and wanted some help on where to plan to go. We will fly in and out of Bucharest (but otherwise plan on avoiding the capital). We are very interested in hiking and nature. Not long 5-day hikes, but day hikes (or one night hikes- we can bring a tent but not cooking supplies, etc). An ideal place would be one where we could spend a couple nights and go on different hikes each day and then come back and spend the night at the same place. In the mountains, not the coast, is the preference. Or, to go on a day hike, then bus it to somewhere nearby and do the same. Another cool thing would be to check out the local cultural stuff going on. We plan to spend at least a couple nights in Sibiu.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks,Ray
and my answer is:
If you don't necessary need to hike near Sibiu,
for day-hikes Bucegi Mountains are good because they very easy to reach from Bucharest (by train or by car) and also very easy accessible as you practically start hiking in the railway station. The drawback is that they are pretty crowded by summer-time, especially during the week-ends.
Also from that area you can hike Postavaru Mountains or Baiului Mountains, therefore there are a lot of opportunities for day-hikes.
If you decide to go to that area you can locate yourself in Sinaia or (better) Busteni for a few days (explore Bucegi, Baiului) than move to Predeal (ony 30 km north from Busteni) and from here hike on Postavaru, Piatra Mare and even Baiului. An alternative is going to Piatra Craiului Mountains, considered by many the most beautiful mountain in Romania. Here you can stay in Plaiul Foii Chalet (900 m asl) or in Curmatura Mountain Hut, 1600 m asl. and there are hiking trails for about one week.
If time allows you can combine Bucegi, Postavaru and Piatra Craiului.
For Sibiu I would suggest spending the night in Marginimea Sibiului Area, there are many traditional villages and a gorgeous landscape.
All best,
Radu
